"Hand shake issues with PS3 and HDMI" 2009-10-09
By Oscar Ocampo (Boynton Beach, FL)
If you own a PS3 and want to connect it to this TV, DON'T BUY THIS TV. I also have issues with the PS3 Blu-ray player even with Composite cables. It is extremely frustrating. I bought a $900 + TV and I am only able to use it to watch HD programming through cable. Beware!!!!!

"Give me a second chance!" 2009-08-08
By J. S. Mansill (Whangarei, New Zealand)
I found that out of the box the picture was very poor, tried all the preset picture modes (Vivid, Standard, Cinema etc) still crap. However, once I adjusted the individual settings, i.e. turned the sharpness way down and modified colour and backlight, the picture was outstanding. So different in fact I could not believe it was the same TV. I watch alot of HD sport and blu-ray movies at a viewing distance of 12 feet and can not fault it for the money. No image "fox-trailing"/image blur. Don't get me wrong I would have loved to have brought Panasonic 1080p plasma for better contrast ratio but could not afford or justify the extra money. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - just don't trust the preset picture settings. My fav settings, Backlight 21 - Contrast 79 - Brightness 62 - Color 75 - Sharpness 0 - Tint G7

 "poor quality or defective" 2009-06-12
By Dave W (Los Angeles, CA)
I ordered this TV based on the reviews and I was disappointed. The TV was fuzzy in spots, but not enough for me to be sure it was defective. However, based on this reviews, i assume it has to be. The HDTV channels are clear except for certain areas are blurry. Edges around graphics sometimes come in blurry. Especially bad with sports programming. The non HDTV channels came in worse than my old tube TV. I had cable come to check the connection, no issues there. I plugged it in to where I haave another hdtv (which works great) and it was blurry there too.

I returned it and ordered the Panasonic plasma G10 - it's on its way.

"Great picture - not that great sound" 2009-05-18
By Casey
This is the first HD tv I have ever purchased, but I have lived with roommates for over 4 years that have owned HD tvs the entire time.

I am very satisfied with the picture on this TV (for the price). The blacks looks very deep, and TimeWarner cable looks awesome, as do xbox 360 games and BluRay discs.

My only gripe is the sound. Sometimes I have to turn it up near the maximum volume of 100 to hear things properly, and the speakers have a very noticeable rattle to them, even when they are not cranked all the way up.

I got a killer deal on this TV around Christmas time, and I'm planning to hook up surround sound to eliminate the quiet/rattling speakers problem, so overall I'm very satisfied.

 "Best Value...period!" 2009-05-18

This TV is fantastic. We used it at our trade show booth with an LG Blu-Ray disk player and the video and sound quality was tremendous. We received many compliments on it and we couldn't have been happier! For the money, you can't buy a better product, thanks so much!

"Great TV, Decent Price, Nice Features" 2010-02-23
By Greg F. Riegler (Pensacola, FL USA)
I purchased this TV with the idea it may retire to my bedroom after a while with a larger replacement - thus I didn't go top of the line (250hz LED,etc). Though I was pleasantly surprised with the clean appearance, ease of set up, great picture, excellent sound (for a TV), and the broadband/netcast features are nice.

I have a Blu-ray player that allows me to stream netflix, though not having to turn on that device and be able to stream netflix directly to this TV is a nice feature. Via use of USB (or I can only assume, NAS Storage device via ethernet) you can watch downloaded TV shows/Movies with ease. (playback of avi, mpeg, mkv, etc) As well as view photos and play music.

120hz is a little surreal at times but that's true with any TV - though it looks great on sports - I've also noticed on some HD channels that are known to knock out ever other frame (ABC...) the 120hz at LOW setting seems to smooth back the playback a little. Though I generally have it turned off. the 24p Cinema mode, when coupled with a blu-ray player gives a nice smooth playback. Dynamic contrast and "Eye Care" settings are good for watching movies in the dark without having scenes that go so bright they blind you.

I was surprised by the quality of the audio coming from the built in speakers. The 'invisible speaker' stuff this TV touts is actually nice, there are no visible speakers on the unit, yet it sounds full. Granted heavy bass does drop out - but this is one of the first TV's I've been comfortable listening to the audio from directly. (Minus the old school Monster projector TVs with the 10 speakers below the screen). Though I have this set up via optical cable to my 5.1 Surround - the week or 2 I didn't have that set up I wasn't cringing at bad sound.

The price doesn't drop as low as the 42LH40 or LH30 price - but with the added features of the broadband and netcast, I don't regret spending the extra cash. I got the TV in late January for $799 shipped.

This is my first fullsized LCD display - I can't say its 'The Best' but for the price, features, and overall quality - I feel this product in the range of similar projects holds true - which is why I gave it a 5 Star rating.

 "Great TV!" 2010-02-22
By Tim Worthey
I finally decided to come into the 21st century and purchase a flat screen! After weeks of researching features, size, and price, I chose this LG. It seemaed to have the best fit for me. I am extremely happy with this TV. The picture is vivid, the sound quality good, and setup was very easy. When I compare it to the Samsungs that other family members own, I cannot see the difference. I have long been a fan of LG products and this has reinforced that opinion.

Whether watching Blu-ray, HDTV, or standard cable the picture quality is very good.

A valuable lesson that I have learned.....always check with Amazon BEFORE making a purchase elsewhere. They had the absolute best deal of anyone out there!

"Best for 1st time HDTV owner..." 2010-02-20
By Rebel_w_Cause (FL)
This is a decent TV for the price and features. However, I really don't agree with all the enthusiam of other reviewers (I wish I did). The image is good but it is just not "the best", "unbelievable", etc. Feature-wise, you get a lot for the money. The widgets are nice, although not enough of them, the Netflix integration work very well. I suppose VUDU is nice to have but I personally don't see what it has to offer (at a cost) that Netflix doesn't (if you're a subscriber).

IMO, this TV has only a decent picture. If you have never owned another HDTV, you will probably be totally satisfied. I returned a Sony 40"S5100 due to QC issues. That tv had a much better picture. Better blacks and colors. It was however, plagued by quality issues that made it a headache. The LG has had none of those issues so far (knocking on wood).

The TruMotion is really a joke, IMO. It is not made for movies or TV but for Gaming and some sports and makes anything else look very unnatural! Note that this set is 120hz and that has noting to do with the Trumotion in the setup. It is confusing the was LG has it in the settings. 120hz is on by default and turning the 120 setting is selecting Trumotion.

Sound on the LG is good. I have no problems with it and is probably better than most. Granted, none of these tvs is made to impress with their sound systems.

So, if you're a gamer and not too particular (AKA picky) you will most definitely be happy with this set, especially for the money. This is especially true if you want easy access to Netflix w/o having to be a techy.

If not a gamer and you are particular, I'd say get another tv and set it up with an HTPC which will give you more internet viewing options. I'm happy with my purchase but I'd probably do the latter if I could do it again.

Hope this has helped someone.

 "Absolutely Outstanding" 2010-02-17
By Ronald Ibach (Memphis)
A truly great product. Super sharp picture. Multi-connections to both PC, internet, TV, video etc. Amazing that it can get both NetFlix, VUDU, and Yahoo Widgets through internet connection. Multiple HDMI connections, reads video and jpg directly from my external hard drive, great sound . . . lots and lots of special features.

 "Life is Good" 2010-02-14

I have been looking at LCD TV's for over a year and reading reviews like this one that I am giving for a TV that I would have to live with. I also based my decision on the spec-sheet given out by the manufactures. I found that the bigger the integer in the model number the better the specs were. In the case of LG I only would look at sets with a model number 50 and above. These sets had tens of thousands of contrast ratio, response times greater than 5 ms, (the smaller the number the greater it is: 2 ms is greater than 8 ms) vertical rates of 120 HZ, and lots of inputs. This model had DSL input which was the straw that triggered my purchase with a price that I could manage. Cash flow being a major block for me to buy anything. I knew that even if I could afford the TV set I still would not be able to feed it content as charged by cable, or satellite feeds. Off the air was said not to be available for the area I live in. I am able to buy basic DSL and this LG takes the output of the AT&T 2wire modem just fine. Plug & Play is what you want. LG provides a Yahoo content which works will enough for me. Who wants to be brain washed by pay for view FOX noise boys anyway? I am getting my news from AP direct just like the commercial TV stations do all be it raw feed but than who needs pay for view FOX noise boys brain washing anyway? I use the YouTube to view PBS news, ABC news, CBS news, NBC news, Daily show, and the BBC world news. What more do you want, the pay for view FOX noise boys? I could get NetFlicks for $5. a month and view old TV shows like the complete 33 episodes of Buck Rogers, Dr Who episodes, Good Neighbors, Are you being served, Keeping Up Appearances, Monty Python, Weeds. . .etc from their first episode to their last, & Movies. Also you may buy into VULU which is sort of like HULU except you PAY. A good deal if you can give up the money for that content. I intend to put my computer into the mix so that I can access HULU just to see more free & current content. First I have to learn Linux because my experiments with MS XP causes major melt down of the OS when working with HULU thus far and they say that they program for Linux which may be the reason that MS windows blows up TOTALY! I learned the other day that we could have free TV content on line except Republican Bushy FCC tagged the internet not as telecommunication so that the FCC rules for free TV access do not have to apply. Go figure that one! (#$$$#) I have a dream that TV station will broadcast into the internet just like they broadcast into the air for free to view! I blame the cable companies & the Republican FCC for not seeing/saying that a cable is a form of telecommunication subject to free TV access to the public. All that money that the TV station & networks put into telephone lines, microwave links, satellite feeds, studios on local soil, and MEGA-WATT transmitters on local soil, TAXES to local soil, could be put into a DSL IP. I have a DREAM! No more copper wires! Just a fiber optic line running up & down under my street! To that end I am buying my TV's DSL ready, X0,000 : 1 contrast, 2 ms or better, 120 HZ vertical, HDMI inputs for DVD etc, audio output for Adobe 5 home theater, computer input, USB input, and of course DSL with a 42 inch minimum screen! IT WORKS GREAT! Life is Good with out FOX noise boys! LG. Amazon did me good providing me access to this TV. Thank you Amazon for the great deal! AND thank you LG for a great TV! Thank you YaHoo for some free content Telecommunication access!

 "Great Choice" 2009-09-07
By Jewel Myers
I searched and searched looking for the right flat screen. I was very new to this technology as well. I visited several websites and stores. There are true benefits of both LCD and Plasma; however, the plasma has an awesome view with brighter pictures and excellent for movie nights. Some people say the plasma tv will cause an increase in the electric bill because it does use more energy. I have not noticed much of an increase and I've had this tv for two months now. We watch it everyday. The 720p is great as well because most tv networks broadcast in 720p (The higher, the more expensive for the networks). I am very pleased with this Samsung. It has great sound and picture quality, and you can even connect your laptop computer to the tv. It definitely is a great purchase for the first flat screen tv buyer.

 "Pretty decent plasma" 2009-05-31
By J.B. (NJ)
I originally purchased this TV as a gift for my parents' however they thought it was too much (not in price wise though). So I ended up giving them my new 32" LCD that was in my bedroom ... however the gift was just for a spare room in their home that didn't have a TV (which I wanted 1 to be in there).

Anyhow, I purchased this TV in DEC08 -- nearly 5 months & it's already discontinued, although I don't know how long it actually survived on the market. Overall, it works pretty well up to my standards even though I don't spend too much time watching it. Nonetheless, I've occasionally noticed that it seems to be subject of a slight burn-in. I really don't know ... But I'm starting to feel as if this TV won't last me too long because sometimes I see an image very faintly when I turn it off or switch onto vid-mode. Like the previous channel's logo will still be there for a moment.

The design/look is nonetheless, stylish! Which is a plus but I'm not too sure about the actual quality of it just yet. So far I will give it 4 out of 5 (although I would say a 3.5 is more suitable).

"Excellent set -- and differences with newer model 42B450" 2009-05-23
By ALAN (New Orleans, LA United States)
I own this model 42A450 plasma as well as an earlier Samsung 4254 plasma, similar to this model. Both are excellent sets with beautiful PQ even in 720p or 1080i instead of 1080p. The only realistic reason to spend $ for the 1080p in a set this size (42 or smaller) would be for even greater clarity using BluRay, since neither cable nor antenna broadcasts arrive in 1080p so the 720p set does as well as any can. Even then, one of my sets IS hooked up to BluRay and it is still an amazing picture even in "only" 720p HD. Watching the BBC's Planet Earth series is a treat. Anyway, I just do not sit close enough to the set to see any difference in the few signals, like BluRay, that use the 1080p resolution. Buying 1080p is at best about bragging, not reality.

At any rate, so far there is no Samsung plasma in 42 inches that is full 1080p (nor really should there be, given the lack of ability to tell), though soon they will release a 42B550 that does offer that.

I highly recommend considering this set in plasma and "only" 720p in contrast to an LCD in 1080p that will be about 5000 times slower in response time and with less rich colors. For me, the only reason I would opt for LCD in a bigger screen like 42 or 50 inches would be if I lived at altitude (plasma buzzing) or had a lamp or sunlight right behind the unit (direct glare -- but this swivels anyway, to adjust). I just do not see paying extra for a non-discernible 1080p resolution in a blurrier LCD.

I do not have the newer model 42B450, which is much like this 42A450, but it appears to have many of the same features and qualities. I discount claimed differences in dynamic contrast and refresh speed because those are ephemeral or higher than one would ever use even on the older models with smaller numbers, e.g., you would not set it to dynamic anyway so a native contrast of 20,000:1 is plenty. Right now they are about the same price, so I suppose most would opt for the B model, and I suspect it continues this set's value and quality. But I would note there may be a reason to grab this A model before it is gone (or at a cheap price if it is on clearance). For instance, the A model has an S-video port (as does my older 4254), while the B model does not (nor does the 42A400). That may lose some customers who own a nice DVD player using S-video who are not prepared to get rid of that just to say they own the 2009 model TV instead of the 2008 42A450. The A model also has a V-chip. Perhaps the B model does too, but I would check first before buying it if that feature matters to you. I do not see it listed in the Amazon product description as it is for the 42A450. Nor does the 42A400 have that chip. Just wanted to note the differences and assure those considering the 42A450 that it is an excellent set and really not "older" in any way that matters. And in one way -- old enough to continue S-video -- some buyers will prefer it.

Aesthetically, the 42A450 looks sleek and modern when mounted to the wall. It does not look like "last year's model" in my opinion. There is easy access to the S-video port and one of the HDMI ports from the side (as well as composite RCA jacks for quick hookup of game consoles or most camcorders), in addition to the harder-to-reach back plugs of many varieties including two more HDMIs.

Finally, I hook all my HDMI components up with fairly cheap HDMI cables found on Amazon, not Monster, and do not believe that makes a difference at all for a digital signal. I do use better RF cable for analog, and ferrite cores on all connections necessary, to reduce interference. If you do get buzzing on your plasma and are not at altitude, it may well be the connections and power cord -- perhaps a ferrite core near the plug or a better power center with surge suppressor and line filtering will make the buzz disappear. Hope this helps.

 "Can't beat it!" 2009-03-17

Colors are outstanding, audio very good and set up was super easy. For the price this TV is an excellent value. You won't be disapointed.

"Awesome Plasma Display! Amazing for the money!" 2009-03-03
By BlackSCRunner (Boston, MA United States)
This review is for the Samsung HPT4264 which is this models predecessor. I can only imagine this TV is as good or better, and I could not be happier with mine! I use it to watch TV (HD & regular), play video games (PS2) and watch DVD's on an upconvert DVD player. The picture is stunning. Better than my Sharp LCD, way better than my Olevia LCD, better than the Sony plasma's I have seen, and also slightly better than the Panasonic that my friend has. For the money, I don't think you can do better. I was a Panasonic fan until I saw a friend's Samsung and was blown away by the colors, so sharp and vivid (and more so than the Panny). My next TV purchase will be a Samsung LCD which a friend has recently aquired and in 1080P and no plasma burn to worry about, it seems like the way to go, especially for video games. Incidently, I broke in my TV in as recommended, and I do play PS2 on it, and it has not displayed any permanent burn-in. But that topic is for an entirely different debate of plasma vs. LCD. I think the only way you can do better than this TV price/performance is to consider a Samsung LCD 1080p, which have come down a lot in price, but will still set you back a few hundo more than this one. If you buy this I don't think you will be disappointed!

"Great value for the money" 2010-02-08
By Brent Allen (Scottsdale AZ)
I purchased this for my parents who are older and very low tech. It has delivered everything promised. They have not had any difficultly using the controls, picture is very good and sound is reasonable for the price. Connectors are conveniently placed on the side and rear of unit.

 "My First Flatscreen - Panasonic TC-P42X1" 2010-02-02
By Robert A. Vandenberg (Florida)
I'm a strongly value sensitive shopper(not just price). The price even with shipping, easily beat a brick-and-mortar store advertised price which also was good. I first learned of this model from a major consumer magazine.

Picking between LCD and Plasma or between 720p and 1080p were not easy choices. To get a comparable 1080p LCD with at least a 120hz refresh rate would have cost me nearly twice as much. The brightness on the Panasonic TC-P42X1 plasma is just fine, even in a relatively bright room. Reflections are no more troublesome than I expected. I actually prefer the rich look of the glossy screen. One plasma benefit I really do care about is that you can view the screen from virtually any angle and it looks the same. You can't do that with an LCD.

Bottom Line: I'm quite satisfied.

 "Great HDTV" 2010-02-01
By Burt Twangcaster (KCMO)
Had this a month now. Researched it through Consumer Reports and also through web reviews. Not disappointed. Looks and sounds great! Plasma picture is crystal clear, even though it is 720p rather than 1080p. We are on an antenna NOT cable, about 55 miles from downtown KC. Great picture. Prices seem to continue to come down. We paid $668 with free delivery and no tax (out of state vendor). Have seen it priced at $599 recently in the area, but add tax and shipping and we're still way ahead. Looking to purchase a home theater sound system to go with this and the blue-ray player we just got.

Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV

Read all the wonderful reviews about this tv and was worried about ordering it on line. Ordering went well. It arrived on time. And it was very easy to set up with my satilite system. Picture is wonderful. Thought about getting the 50" or the 42" in 1080i, but the price on this one was just to good to let slide. Am very happy with this plasma and would very highly recomend it!

 "Bailey" 2010-01-31
By Mark Bailey (Minnesota)
The Panasonic HD 46" is a perfect size. The picture quality is excellent. Plasma is great! I know there is concern about viewing the screen in the dark but as long as you can keep any reflection off your screen, it's not a problem. All TV's will be interfered with a reflection on the screen anyway. You just have to position it away from the window for example. I love the TV, no problems with it. I was more concerned about ordering it via the net. It was delivered by a local delivery company, they took it out of the box for me to make sure nothing was damaged and told me to wait 2 to 3 hours so the TV could warm up (weather was below zero here)and it was easy to set up. I had to get an HD dish first though.

"Very Good Buy! Nice Color" 2010-02-06
By Paulo Kretly Jr (Las Vegas, USA)
Got it last x-mas... so far so good...Very nice TV! Overall 5 stars!!!

The only bad thing I found is the USB port on it quite useless... Doesn't recognize my cannon sd780is which I think is popular camera. Also tried a 2gb thumb drive with no luck. Another thing is the only output on it is a optical for audio, that's it, no video or coax audio. Other then that thumbs up.

LG is a good brand so I Knew it was going to be a good buy.

Go for it!

By mark7432 (California)
This TV has a great picture. When watching in HD, the picture is simply stunning. This is only a 720P set, yet I can she minute details on the faces of people. Excellent in a darker room. The one thing that this TV lacks is some kind of glare reducer. If one can put the set in a place avoiding sunlight, it would be absolutely perfect

 "Glorious Picture!" 2010-01-07
By John L.
I have had this TV for about three months now and the picture quality is outstanding. In fact, the only imperfection I notice is a slight haloing effect when really bright elements are adjacent to really dark ones (I usually only see this during film credits with bright text on a black background but it's nothing major). This haloing effect seems due to the two-layer deign (a clear plastic layer set in front of the main plasma screen). I think this is the main trade-off at this price level. Otherwise, the picture is gorgeous. The picture is so good that, unfortunately, it reveals all the flaws in over-compressed "hi-def" source material. I have DISH HD and I notice a lot of artifacts and black crush (over-compression of dark parts of an image). I can't wait until the satellite, cable companies, and studios stop over-compressing their signals so I can enjoy a real hi-def picture. And when they do, this little LG will easily be up to the task. Be warned, it is essential that you adjust the brightness, contrast, and especially the gamma to get a great picture. Out of the box I was unimpressed but after several hours of tweaking I finally honed-in on a near-perfect combination of settings for my satellite and DVD/bluray. The brightness, clarity and naturalness of the picture sometimes gives me the sense that I'm looking out a window instead of at a television. This tv is much like my expensive Sony Trinitron CRT except with a wide screen, perfect geometry and much higher resolution. Also, the up-conversion it does for standard definition is the best I've ever seen. I wasn't sure I wanted a plasma because I couldn't find one that wasn't an unbelievable power hog but this little beauty is rated at a scant 180 watts which is less than my smaller 37" LCD! At this price level, I would have to give this TV 6 stars (on a 5-star scale).

"No longer a top rated television" 2010-02-10
By TeamReveal (California)
Over the past month people have been discovering that their 2008 and 2009 Panasonic televisions are no longer performing how they were meant to perform. One of the major reasons why the Panasonic plasmas are (actually now "were") considered so fantastic is because they had excellent black levels, meaning the blacks look really black.

Well that's no longer the case because after a few hundred hours the black levels double and triple to a point where even a mid-range LCD beats it. Panasonic issued a statement that they knew the issue existed and that they were investigating it. Well today they issued a statement that the issue has been reviewed and that there will be NO FIX.

Now to be fair, black levels do rise slightly over time, but they do not double and triple. In fact the Panasonic Plasmas from 2007 do not have this problem. To further prove this, a 2007 Panasonic Plasma after a couple thousand hours of use has BETTER blacks than a 2009 Panasonic Plasma after a couple thousand hours of use.

When Panasonic was asked about this, they said they were constantly "updating" their products. That's good, but basically they are doing a bait and switch on you. They brought down the black levels so they could sell you the television and hope that you don't realize that their newer sets will look worse than their older sets after less than a year of use.

The 2009 Panasonic sets look fantastic till this happens, but once it happens they look worse than 2007 models.

As a side note, the THX on these sets came broken for over half a year. The newer sets have the firmware that corrects the color decoding issues, but if your set doesn't have firmware 1.28A then you have to call Panasonic to have them send someone to your house to update the firmware. Panasonic won't deny you the repair but they sure will try and keep it a secret because they have to pay for the technician to come to your home.

At this point, you're going to see a lot of review cites like [...] mention this issue because it is a serious quality issue. Currently [...] is conducting its own study with the sets it has in house. It'll be about two months before they get done because they have to let the television set run for several hundred hours in order to take measurements.

Please note that this isn't an issue you'll see when you buy the television, it'll be something that comes up later in its life, possibly after the 1 year warranty is up.

 "I love this TV" 2010-02-10
By Nicholas Spencer (Austin, TX USA)
I spent forever researching TVs a few months ago and this is the one I finally arrived at. It fits my budget and provides excellent picture quality.

I have the misfortune of being a videophile with insufficient funds to buy very expensive TVs, but I was able to satisfy myself with this one. The blacks are great, the THX mode function is awesome for watching blu-ray movies. My roommates and I play a lot of videogames and this TV has been great for that as well. Remember, BURN IN IS NOT AN ISSUE IN NEWER PLASMA TVS. I don't use the TV's sound much since we have a speaker system, but it sounds fine. The online functionality is cool, especially since you can rent movies from Amazon directly from your TV.

Originally I wanted to get a Panasonic S1, which has the same screen, just less features. At first I was hesitant to spend a little more, but now I'm glad I did. As I said earlier, the THX mode is great and the online functionality makes it totally worth it. Plus that silver on the bezel looks sexy.

The only drawback I would say is having only 3 HDMI ports instead of 4, but I can make do.

Oh, and just a random heads-up, never clean your screen with Windex or any similar solution. It damages the chemical treatment on the glass. Instead, use the microfiber cloth the TV comes with.

 "Buyer Beware!!!!!" 2010-02-05
By A. Rosenberger (Cali)
After doing much research and finally pulling the trigger and buying Panasonic's V10 plasma model, I was shocked to recently find many widespread reputable reports that black levels on Panasonic 2008 and 2009 model plasmas may double or in some cases triple after approximately 1000 hours of use.

At this point I can only wish I had found this information before I made my purchase, so I'm passing it on to anyone else who may be considering any of these models.

My V10 picture is fantastic at the moment, but I can only wait in fear that I may have spent $2K dollars on something that will lose one of it's best qualities after only months of normal use.

The issue is described and commented in detail here:

"great tv but seems dim indoor scenes, horrible stand" 2010-02-03
By A. Arya (san mateo, CA United States)
I had a LCD before, but we upgraded to this to fill up the living room. We choose plasma because we heard the pic is more accurate and it's faster for fast moving objects. This model was highly rated, and we got it for $950 total. Did the break in, and watched it in the dim mode for the 100+ hrs. After that we upped the calibrated the tv using the DVE calibration disk. The picture is great, and incredible in HD. Outdoor scenes really pop!

For some reason the video is what I'd describe as a sheet of film over the video. Then we turned off the CATs feature and it brightened up (just turn off all those video enhancements). Now the only other picture comments I have is: 1. I notice when watching certain commercials, you can see shades of the same color...I don't know if it's an effect used in these commercials, because it doesn't happen when watching regular tv. 2. bright parts (like when watching outdoor scenes) almost look shiny...like there are ice crystals shining on the screen...but the contrast is set at 60, and if it's lessened it's still there. i'll play with the calibration disk again.

The other grip i have is the tv stand. our entertainment system has a front speaker that has to be offset on the tv stand because the IR for the tv is right behind it. Basically, the tv is too low to have anything in front of it. if the stand put the tv 5" higher, the speaker would be aesthetically placed well. if you wall mount, or dont have a front speaker, then don't worry about it.

"Best TV I've Ever Owned" 2010-01-13
By Mr. K (Atlanta, GA)
Picture quality is awesome! Out-of-the box is very good and even better with DIY calibration. If PQ is your highest priority in a TV, look no further at this price point. SD cable programming looks fine but 1080i HD cable is fantastic and 1080p BluRay is unbelievable. I've always had a few nitpick issues with my previous TV's. Each subsequent set was an improvement (with commensurate cost increase) over the previous set but still had flaws. I have no complaints whatsoever with this one (and it was cheaper than my last set!).

Black levels are outstanding, by far the best I've ever had in a TV, and colors are vibrant without being oversaturated. CRT is supposedly the gold standard but I've owned a few decent tubes and they are not even close. Forget about LCD's (better BL than before, but can't touch plasma).

User controls are straightforward. The THX setting is good for some movies if you're watching in the dark, but I usually tweak it a bit from there. Sound quality is good (for a TV) and it is plenty loud for everyday viewing. But a good HT setup is indispensable. Extra features (YouTube and Picassa viewers, stock ticker, weather channel, Amazon Video) are a bonus but were a non-factor in my choice.

I ordered from Amazon. It arrived in a few days and the TV was well packaged and had no damage whatsoever.

If you are looking for a 42" TV at this price point, you would be hard pressed to find a better one.

"Great tv, great value" 2010-02-12 By Scott Conger Couldn't be happier with this tv. Admittedly, the tv this one replaced was a 9 year old Sony tube that was starting to fade which made the difference more dramatic. Easy set up out of the box and the picture is fantastic. I did a lot of research before buying and kept coming back to this unit. It lacks some of the bells and whistles of the more expensive units but I wouldn't have used those extras anyway. If you're the average tv watcher you will love this set.
"Great Tv, Audio is a problem." 2010-02-09 By Samuel Larson (AUSTIN, TX, US) So the TV itself is amazing. Fantastic picture, Easy to use, self explanatory menu, and all the connection you could ever want. I cannot praise this TV more for the TV itself. The problem: There is no analog audio out. If you have an older receiver and want to use surround sound, you'll need a new receiver or an optical to analog audio converter, which will run you $100 for 5.1 surround. VERY disappointed with this fact. The deal on the TV is pretty much negated by the fact I need a $100 little box or spend $200+ on a new receiver. [...]
"What a TV for the price" 2010-02-09 By Eric Ferraiuolo (Boston, MA USA) When I saw the deal Amazon had on this TV, it was a no-brainer to buy it. This TV has been excellent. I've recommended it to everyone whom I know looking to get a new HDTV.
"Great Picture But Won't Last ... Blinking Light of Death!!!" 2010-02-06 By The Hillbilly Machinist (Letart, West Virginia) Don't waste your money ... don't buy a Panasonic ... there overpriced junk! Yes, they have an amazing picture but they only last on average about 2-3 years before breaking (blinking light of death)! What good is a HDTV that doesn't work and cost 3/4 of the price of a new TV to get repaired. If that weren't enough, Panasonic only gives you a 1 year warranty which means that they won't stand behind their so called "quality" product. Don't be a sucker! Buy a cheap off-brand TV and when it breaks in 2-3 years you won't be out that much cash. All TV manufacturers are using cheap Chinese electronic components which means you're lucky if your TV last more than 3 years. Don't be fooled into thinking your buying quality by buying Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, etc. ... trust me ... your not ... they're are Chinese junk! It makes no difference whether there LCD or Plasma ... the outcome is the same ... a junk TV. I have a workbench of broken flat panels (LCD & Plasma) to prove it!
"Panasonic Plasma 42 inch" 2010-02-05 By Mark C. Anderson The TV came highly regarded from Consumer reports and it has lived up to their review. The picture quality is very good from all seats in my Den. Setting up the TV was easy and I recommend a good quality HDMI cable if you want the "best" to come out of your TV viewing experience. Buying from Amazon was easy, the pricing very competitive, and the delivey was right on time. No complaints - would use Amazon again. All Reviews

"Great TV for price paid" 2010-02-07
By A. Gift For Your (Chicago, IL)
Got this TV at a bargain price ($740) through 6th Avenue Electronics (through Amazon). Just received the TV and have been watching movies and sports on it. The picture quality is great. This is the first LCD that I have purchased. I used to have a 52" Magnavox (DLP), but the color wheel crapped out on me (after 3 years). I figured going with a smaller TV (for our future bedroom) would be the way to go.

So far, the picture quality is great. I have used the Wii and Xbox 360 with the TV. The picture is alright for both gaming systems, but not excellent. The HDTV aspect (through DirecTV) has been fantastic. Sports look fantastic (specifically hockey) on the TV. Am excited to watch the Super Bowl on the new TV. No negatives so far.

 "Wow Factor" 2010-02-05
By F. White
We bought the Toshiba 42ZV650U from Amazon sold through J&R Music for a low low price of $759 delivered. We ordered on Tuesday morning and was delivered on Friday the same week. I wasn't expecting a high quality TV at this price, but after un-boxing and setting up the Wow Factor set in. This TV simply has an amazing picture quality. The sound is perfect for our bedroom. My wife even said we should buy the 55" model for our living room. Can't do that because we have a beautiful Mitsubishi WS-65813 there now, which NO TV can beat the picture quality that we've had for more than 5 years now. However if it goes completely out and can not be repaired I'd would pull the trigger on the 55" model as a replacement. I hooked up a Apple Mac Mini as a bedroom media server to this TV via HDMI and it looks wonderful. (NOTE when hooking up a Mini to the TV via HDMI change the Screen Mode to NATIVE to fit the screen.) If you decide to purchase this TV do not hesitate because the quality that your looking for in a $2K TV is in the lower priced Toshiba ZV650U series. Enjoy!

 "Very happy" 2010-02-04
By Shu (Cupertino, CA)
We bought this TV on line and it's really the best TV for the price. At the beginning, I struggled to make the VGA display to work at 1280x1024 like we did on the older Toshiba HDTVs. After talking with Toshiba and trying out the HDMI output with 1080p output, though VGA works fine, we decided to upgrade our PC to HDMI and also get a HD PC monitor to work with this TV. It's really the best buy at this moment of beautiful life.

 "Disappointment." 2010-02-02
By Arturo K. Castaneda (Sugar Land, TX. USA)
We returned this product because the sound quality was bad and the picture was not as clear as our old 32" Sony Bravia. The Toshiba claims to be Full HD 1080p, the Sony is not Full HD, it is 720p, but has a much better definition than the Toshiba. Also, the black items look a dark grey. It is not what we expected. It had a good rating in Consumer Reports, but it was not one of the recommended sets.

Panasonic TH-42PX60U

Amazon.com Product Description

Featuring Panasonic's 9th generation gas-plasma screen, the 42-inch TH-42PX60U features a width-to-height 16:9 aspect ratio similar to movie theater screens, providing a theater-like experience at home. Its maximum of 29 billion colors and over 3,000 shades of gradation provide exceptionally fine detail for outstanding HDTV reproduction. The set's built-in ATSC (DTV) tuner pulls HD signals (480p/720p/1080i) right from the airwaves, and its QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception. A standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming. It also includes a Secure Digital (SD) memory card slot, enabling you to take an SD card directly from a digital still camera or camcorder and insert it directly into the TV for quick and colorful photo slideshows.

A plasma screen renders vivid colors like you've never seen before (as in, up to 29 billion in this case), extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than those of most LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor's slim profile--the TH-42PX60U is a mere 3.7 inches deep, one of the slimmest plasmas around--perfect for desk or wall mounting. Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems.

The TH-42PX60U features a 1024 x 768-pixel resolution and an amazing contrast ratio of 10000:1. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time, to reduce dramatically edge image artifacts while improving transition detail. Other features include V-Chip parental controls, on/off sleep timers, closed-caption decoding, aspect ratio control, and video input labeling.

The TV's internal stereo speakers are powered by 10 watts per channel (for 20 watts of total power). It features the following connection options:

  • Component (Y/Pb/Pr): 2 inputs (with 2 audio inputs)
  • HDMI: 2 inputs
  • Composite (RCA audio/video): 3 inputs (1 on the front), 1 output
  • S-Video: 3 inputs (1 on the front)

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any AV source with an audio and/or video monitor, such as a digital television (DTV). HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable.

If a component doesn't have an HDMI connection, you'll also get great picture reproduction using the three-jack component video (Y/Pb/Pr) input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. Component video output is available only for DVD playback.

What's in the Box
Plasma TV, remote control (with batteries), pedestal base, power cord, printed operating instructions

"red light flashes 11 times" 2009-05-19
By Thomas C. Stoddard (Boston, ma)
Had a good picture while it lasted. If I can get the set to turn on, it stays on for about 45 min. then pop! no picture or sound and the little red light flashes 11 times, pauses, and flashes 11 more times. NOT what I expected from a Panasonic product. From what I've read, this is a problem others have experienced with this tv an will cost you $600 or more to be fixed. My solution is to stay away from this Manufacturer and today I purchased a Sony 46" LCD for $950 which includes tax and shipping. Don't be a fool and throw away your $$$$ like I did. I paid $2300 three years ago. You won't pay as much today but do you want to take the chance????

 "Fantastic picture" 2009-01-19
By GinLA (LA, CA)
I have had this TV for 2 years and the picture is amazingly clear! For a 720P, I don't know if you will find better clarity. Sounds if average, but you should be using a stereo for surround sound. I have never had a problem and this would be a great buy at todays prices, maybe $600-$700!

Watch out this TV has a ton of problems check out Fixia.com! I have had this less than 2 years and the thing has had 3 major problems. Panasonic has finally given up sending people out to fix it. Now if i want anything I have to pay myself when the TV was a lemmon to begin with. What a joke you pay $1400 for a TV and they rip you off. This TV has 3 common problems 1 The power board (when this happens it will not turn on) 2 The electronics package ( when this happens it give u bar code lines usually the left hand side 3 The plasma screne itself ( when this happens half or all the screne will go black or white) DO NOT BUY THIS TV

 "Excellent TV" 2008-04-28
By Kirk K. Deligiannis (NYC)
I cannot say enough good things about this television. Only wish it had a computer input, but my new comp has component video out, so that is no longer a problem either. Stunning screen, made the super bowl that much better. Highly, highly recommended.
